500種もの属を持つカンパニュラ（Campanula）は、一般的に「ベルフラワー」の名で親しまれています。最もよく知られている種の一つは、イングランドやスコットランドでは「ヘアベル」（または「スコティッシュ・ブルーベル」）、アメリカ合衆国では「バージニア・ブルーベル」と呼ばれています。5枚の花弁を持つ特徴的な釣鐘形の花で知られ、花の色はバイオレットブルーからピンク、白まで多岐にわたります。この耐寒性のある植物は、栄養の少ない土壌でも育ち、時には断崖や砂丘に自生しているのも見られます。花自体にはほとんど香りが感じられないと言われていますが、ミツバチやチョウ、ガを惹きつけることで知られています。
